Designed and manufactured in the USA. The original long shank tip for the Hakko FX888D iron. If you see others with these shapes that are not made by Virtjoule, they are copies. The longer shank than other tips allows you to reach deeper into 3D printed parts and tight corners to install thermal inserts without touching the iron and melting the plastic.
Installation tips work better than soldering iron tips because tapered tips can catch the insert and accidentally pull it out, melting the plastic and ruining the part.
Tip sizes include M2, M2.5, M3, M4 and M5. M2.5 is a popular hole size for Raspberry Pi circuit boards. M3 is a popular size for Arduino circuit boards.
Compact tip holder included to keep them together when not in use.

Heat set insert installation tips compatible with Hakko FX888D soldering tips
Strengthen and connect 3D printed and injection molded parts
Heat set inserts are a great way to improve the bonding strength between 3D printed parts.
Don't ruin your 3D printed part by getting the insert installation wrong. Our installation tips have square shoulders and vertical walls that allow them to slide out of the insert without accidentally jamming or pulling out the insert.
The long shaft allows you to reach deep into 3D printed parts.
The thin shaft allows the insert to be installed in tight corners without melting the side plastic.
Vertical wall makes it easy to release the insert once installed.
Square shoulder makes it easy to know if the insert is installed straight.
A must for every 3D printer. Not intended for soldering. Soldering iron not included.
Design your own part with holes for inserts.
Create your design with holes or preholes for where the insert will be placed. These holes should be slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the insert and about 10-15% deeper than the length of the insert so that the plastic will properly fuse, deform and form around the insert. You may need to experiment with your 3D printer, as some are not very accurate and the same inserts may have different outside diameters even if they have the same thread size.
Heat the iron to plastic melting temperature
The hotter the iron, the faster it will melt. This may be desirable in a production environment. If you are a beginner, set the temperature to the melting temperature of the plastic you are using or the extrusion temperature of your 3D printer.
ABS - between 490 and 700 F
PLA - 356F to 428F (180 to 220 C)
If the plastic begins to smoke, lower the temperature. If no melting occurs or too much pressure is needed, raise the temperature.
Horizontal Method
If an insert is placed on the tip when the iron is horizontal, you can press the insert directly into the piece if you hold the iron horizontally. Since the tip is designed not to cling to the insert, if the insert is placed on the tip and then oriented vertically, it will fall off. Hold the piece in one hand and use the iron with the insert on the tip in the other hand, pressing horizontally. This is our preferred method.
Vertical method
If it's not practical or too difficult to install with the horizontal iron, you may need to install the insert vertically. First place the insert over the hole it will go in, making sure the insert is perpendicular to the hole. If necessary, use needle nose pliers to hold it there. Then use the tip of the iron and put it inside the insert and start pressing gently until the insert starts to melt the plastic and moves into place. Just pull the iron up and then out again once the insert is in place.
